Transportation of goods by rail in Finland in January-March 2024 decreased by 20% compared to the previous year. This decline is due to an economic downturn and a strike at the beginning of the year. As noted in the company, due to the strike, some of the cargo switched from rail to road transport, but even freight transportation by vehicles also decreased. After the end of the strike, an increase in freight transport is noted in all directions.
The strikes, which lasted in Finland for 4 weeks from March 11, led to the shutdown of ports, paralyzed cargo deliveries, and disrupted logistics. The Central Union of Finland announced a pause in strikes from April 8, but did not rule out their resumption. Finland’s exports fell by 30% due to the strikes, and it will take a significant amount of time for the economy to recover, noted the Central Chamber of Commerce of Finland.
