Russia plans to significantly expand its border infrastructure with China and other countries by 2030.

According to information presented by Valentin Ivanov, First Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, at the International Customs Forum, the Russian Federation has set an ambitious goal to increase the throughput capacity of automobile checkpoints on the border with the People’s Republic of China sevenfold compared to 2021 levels by 2030.

Ivanov’s presentation also outlined plans to modernize and expand border infrastructure with other neighboring states. For example, the throughput capacity on the border with Azerbaijan is expected to increase 6.5 times compared to 2021 levels, with Mongolia – eight times, and with Kazakhstan – twice.

More detailed data shows that the increase in throughput capacity will be significant already by 2033. It is expected that compared to 2023, the number of vehicles passing through the border with China will increase 3.3 times, which is equivalent to an additional 2180 vehicles per day. Similar figures for the border with Azerbaijan will be 2.3 times (+1100 vehicles per day), with Kazakhstan – 1.8 times (+4100 vehicles per day), and with Mongolia – 4.7 times (+500 vehicles per day).

Valentin Ivanov particularly emphasized in his presentation that “the increase in throughput capacity and the timelines for implementing projects are synchronized with neighboring states,” indicating the coordination of plans and joint work on modernizing border infrastructure.
