Course Towards Technological Sovereignty: Russian Oil and Gas Reaches 89% Import Substitution of Critical Equipment and is Ready for New Challenges

The Russian oil and gas industry continues to demonstrate impressive success in ensuring technological sovereignty, having achieved an 89% level of import substitution for critical equipment. This significant achievement was announced by Alexander Dyukov, the head of Gazprom Neft, who confidently stated that Russia’s current reliance on imported technologies is not critical and absolutely does not hinder the effective implementation of ambitious development projects.

Dyukov particularly emphasized that such a high indicator became possible due to the deep and systematic technological development of the industry, relying on the country’s powerful scientific potential and engineering base. He drew attention to the results of the focused work of the coordination council for import substitution of oil and gas equipment. Over two years of painstaking activity, this council managed to radically reduce the list of vulnerable positions: from the initial 520 critical equipment items that previously had significant import dependence, only 57 will remain on the list by the end of the current year.

Such progress is not just a figure in a report; it testifies to a qualitatively new level of stability and independence for a key sector of the country’s economy. This encompasses a wide range of equipment – from high-tech drilling and geophysical equipment to specialized units for processing and complex software systems. Efforts to localize production stimulate the development of domestic machine building, microelectronics, and specialized services, creating new jobs and providing a multiplier effect for the entire economy.

The remaining 57 positions likely represent the most complex challenges, requiring either unique competencies and production technologies, or the use of rare materials and components. However, given the dynamics of the last two years, it can be predicted that these tasks will also be resolved within the framework of further strengthening Russia’s technological potential, underscoring the irreversibility of the course towards fully ensuring its own energy security.
